Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Matthew 11:29
A yoke is a wooden beam used between a pair of oxen or other animals to enable them to pull together on a load when working in pairs or individually. Jesus extends an invitation to His audience to accept His yoke upon themselves. This signifies allowing Jesus to place His own yoke on us, similar to how a farmer would do so with his livestock. It means giving Jesus control and letting Him direct our efforts. To take Christ’s yoke upon us is to obey God's word and to submit our lives to Him. Accepting His yoke does not involve clinging to burdens such as unforgiveness, bitterness, and shame. Rather, accepting His yoke frees us from these burdens when we humble ourselves in His presence.
Jesus is gentle and humble in heart, and we should follow His example. He devoted his life to obeying the Father. Similarly, when we accept His guidance and learn to rely on Him constantly, we too shall find rest for our souls, for His yoke is easy and His burden is light
