Wood To The Fire

Updated: Jul 15

Without wood a fire goes out; without a gossip a quarrel dies down.

Proverbs 26:20

This verse uses a simple yet powerful image to communicate a deep truth about human relationships. Just like a fire needs wood to keep burning, conflict and division need gossip to stay alive. When the fuel is removed, the flame dies. In the same way, when gossip is stopped, many quarrels and misunderstandings come to an end.

Gossip may seem like harmless talk, but it has the power to destroy friendships, ruin reputations, and divide families and communities. It often comes disguised as concern, curiosity, or even as a prayer request shared with the wrong motives. But the heart of gossip is still the same—it spreads harmful information that wounds others and stirs conflict.

As Christians, we are called to be peacemakers, not fire-starters. Every time we choose to entertain gossip or pass along negative information about someone, we add wood to the fire. But when we choose to be silent, walk away, or gently redirect a conversation, we help put that fire out. It’s not always easy to take the high road. Sometimes avoiding gossip means we feel left out, awkward, or even judged for not joining in. But choosing godliness over gossip is always worth it. Instead of spreading rumors, what if we prayed for the person involved? What if, instead of assuming the worst, we gave grace and understanding? What if we became known not for how much we know about others, but for how much peace we bring into every room we enter?

Let us examine our hearts and be mindful of our words. Are we feeding the fire, or are we helping it die out? Are we quick to speak about others, or are we intentional about building others up? Our words have the power to heal or to harm.

May we choose to speak life, truth, and encouragement. God’s desire is for us to be vessels of peace—reflecting His character in every conversation. So let’s stop adding wood to the fire.

Let the gossip die. Let love and unity grow in its place.
